Security concerns in the Great Lakes region are intensifying as Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo exchange accusations over armed groups and regional security.

GREAT LAKES REGION — Tensions in the Great Lakes region are continuing to rise as Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo exchange serious accusations over security and armed groups. Rwanda has publicly accused the Democratic Republic of Congo of harbouring and supporting an armed group operating within its territory. The accusations add to existing security concerns in a region that has experienced prolonged instability and conflict involving armed groups and neighbouring states. Meanwhile, developments linked to Rwanda's past have also made international headlines. A Dutch court recently sentenced a Rwandan man to life imprisonment over his role in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The developments highlight the continuing security and justice challenges surrounding the Great Lakes region.
